Floridia Introductory Notes
See the mapSurrounded, as in an ideal embrace, by a fertile and lush plain, the territory of Floridia, which bears traces of human presence since the Bronze Age, extends in a harmonious maze of churches, palaces and museum sites which are, together , a testimony to the stylistic and architectural eclecticism of the country and a document of its historical and cultural memory. Its name, Floridia, originates from an Italian transliteration of the toponym Xiuriddia, Xiridia (or Chiridia), attested in documents from the 12th and 14th centuries, in relation to a vast fiefdom, and probably derives from the ancient Xorodia, which in Greek it meant "choral singing" (the reference is perhaps to a festival with dances and choirs in honor of the goddess Flora, who later became "Santa Flora"). The city stands on a plateau crossed by the Anapo river at about 111 m above sea level and is 12 km from the capital, Syracuse. The surrounding countryside once hosted Roman villas and farms which became agricultural villages and then villages. And as a village, Floridia was born in 1627. From its foundation to today, with the interlude of the serious earthquake of 1693 which destroyed the then nascent rural center, requiring a radical reconstruction, the city has grown, developing according to a regular urban planning system (typical of recently formed agricultural colonies) and reaching a population of over 20,000 inhabitants. Since then many churches have been built and numerous religious and social rites have developed around them: the Supper of St. Joseph, the "scupiddi", the processions and rites linked to
